Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, is in Western Africa – bordering the Gulf of Guinea, between Cote d’Ivoire and Togo. Ghana’s diverse geography ranges from coastal savannahs to tropical jungles, and agriculture employs more than half of its workforce. Ghana is well endowed with natural resources, with gold, cocoa and more recently oil, forming the cornerstone of the economy.

Specific Partnership Project

Ghana joined the TRT family in 2014, when NMS (a UK-based group of companies that delivers equipment, training, emergency response and other resources internationally) asked us to deliver a local community development programme around a hospital they were building. Four TRT coaches – including former England Women’s skipper Catherine Spencer – visited eight schools in Accra. Despite not being an IRB registered nation, the Tag Rugby Trust worked closely with NMS to plan and run the tour and it was a huge success.

The programme was initially designed to work in conjunction with the Ghanaian Rugby Football Union (GRFU). At that time, NMS progress on building sites was limited – everything was in set-up mode, but things have now developed. Now there are a number of hospital sites with significant construction progress and NMS would like any follow up Tag programmes to be more far-reaching – working with the surrounding communities to spread the benefits further afield.
