Uganda – The Facts.
Uganda occupies a part of eastern Africa about the size of the UK. It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Lake Victoria, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south and Congo (formerly Zaire) to the west. It is completely landlocked, but has 36,000 sq km of water within its 236,000 sq km of area. Its great beauty led to Winston Churchill referring to it as the ‘Pearl of Africa’.

Since its inception TRT has run annual UK and Local Volunteer lead coaching tours to Uganda. With the kick-start from the tours, the Ugandan TRT Officers and Volunteers have organised school training and several primary school tournaments in the districts of Gulu, Lira, Bushenyi, Entebbe, Kampala, Jinja, Mbale and Soroti. To date we have introduced over 7.000 public primary school children to rugby and have directly continued to teach 84 teachers and 60 local Ugandan rugby volunteer enthusiasts on how to coach the game and the coaching and referee techniques required to continue coaching. We are proud to say that to date, the vast majority of teachers and volunteers we have worked with are all still very willing to acquire more Tag Rugby Coaching skills. In fact in 2009 we helped to establish volunteer tag rugby committees in a number of areas to coordinate coaching schedules and inter-school tournaments.
TRT Uganda has developed an efficient and effective training and coaching structure, and detailed below is the work that continues on a daily basis. Please read the following details about the work that we do, and let us know if you can support any of them. The aim of TRT (Uganda) is to become totally self financing, and we would really appreciate your help in achieving this goal.
Kids Coaching – New and Existing Schools
During the year, we try to expand the game to more new schools that have not been introduced to the sport of Tag Rugby. Having identified interested schools in existing areas, or new schools in new areas, we run a full week programme. We coach each school (kids and teachers) for period of four days and on the fifth day hold a mini tag rugby festival for all the new teams introduced in that week. From the experience that we have, and our unique coaching programme, not only are the kids achieving a high standard in just four days, but the teachers are also being left with enough skills and kit resources to continue the coaching until their next refresher course.
Coach Refresher Courses
Every year we carry out Tag Rugby Refresher courses in coaching and refereeing for our local volunteer coaches and for P.E teachers for all the existing and new schools we have introduced to tag rugby. This course is intended to refresh the minds and knowledge of the game and to enable them acquire and improve their coaching and referee skills. We do this in all of the different regions that we have commenced Tag Rugby.
Grand Tag Rugby Festival
The largest event of the year that we organise is the “Kampala Grand Tag Rugby Festival”. TRT Uganda saw fit to organise an annual Kampala Grand Tag Rugby festival for all the Kampala Primary schools that we have already introduced to the game of Tag Rugby. Our showpiece tournament is an opportunity for the kids to show off their skills in front of large crowds as well as a fantastic opportunity for sponsors to display their support for Tag Rugby and to gain advertising time and space for their products or brand.
We scheduled for this festival to be carried out every second term of the school period to be played at one of the main Kampala Rugby Clubs, either Kyadondo or Kampala.
Guaranteed enthusiastic crowds

Orphanage School / Home Programme
We also run an orphanage school / home programme where we go out to identify two or more orphanage schools / homes to introduce to the game. We similarly train their children in addition to coach the teachers in the skills of Tag Rugby. This is usually a two week programme which is also followed by a mini Tag Rugby tournament. This takes place during the third term of the school period.
As well as the work in Orphanages and homes in Uganda, the TRT (Uganda) team has also helped by facilitating an Orphanage programme in Kenya, which was entirely sponsored by Salesforce.com.
Young Leaders Sports Programme
We are planning to launch a Young Leaders Sports programme in the holiday periods focusing on 14 -18 year olds. This will equip the youngsters with the skills required to train children to play Tag Rugby, to organise and run a Tournament and to prepare teachers to coach the game in the future. Initially in Kampala, the programme will culminate in the young leaders participating in a tour to another part of Uganda (our first one is planned to be in Lugazi).
We have developed this programme as a result of seeing the power of developing leadership skills in young people of this age and the positive impact it has on them during a very important period of their personal development.
Setup and Support Local Committees
As part of our continued support and legacy, we facilitate setting up local committees of coaches in different regions. The local committee is responsible for organising the continued coaching and competition throughout the year, and especially during terms where there is no TRT tour. The committees are an essential piece of the legacy programme, and we ask you to support them generously.
Monitor Regional Progress
TRT Uganda carry out follow up progress visits within all regions already playing the game. The idea of the visit is to find out what kind of help and support will be needed for further growth of Tag Rugby. As well as a chance to assess kit usage and distribution, and to find out any improvements that can be made to our programmes, it is also a good time to speak to local sponsors and to gauge the sponsorship opportunities that may exist in that area.
Since the introduction of Tag Rugby, at least two disused rugby grounds have been reopened and are active once again. The Nile Rugby Club and the Mbale Elephants.

Please Support Us
For this developmental programme and structure to be able to deliver a brighter future for children in Uganda, and for Uganda to have a brighter future as a serious Rugby playing Nation in Africa with a wide player base, TRT Uganda is seeking sponsorship to help finance our work that we have described above. With TRT (UK) supporting Tag Rugby in many countries, it is important that TRT (Uganda) start finding local support for an activity that very clearly benefits the Ugandan people.
