on Oct 25 in Events, Media, News, Zambia tagged by Martin TRTBy Jon Turner
On Saturday 22nd October Baobab students organised the Lusaka Independence Tag rugby tournament. This was on the weekend when Zambia celebrated its 47th birthday. The following schools entered three teams each; Guardian Angels. SOSCO, St. Patricks, Musamba basic, Mount Makulu and the host school Chilanga basic.
These schools have now become a regualar part of the Baobab community outreach work and the Students from Baobab are full engaged in the coaching and coming together for Tournament Days. All the UK schools that have Toured to Zambia over the last 3-4 years will be pleased to hear the ongoing energy and enthusiasm for Tag Rugby here in Lusaka. One or two of their T-shirts made an appearance on the day too !
A very very hectic schedule saw 48 games played in temperatures nearing 40 degrees. The games were well refereed by the Baobab students including the youngest ever referee age 10 years old, David Turner, as well as Tag “veteran” Mary. The tournament was structured into three tiers with games played on a round robin basis with the first and second team in each tier playing a final as follows;
A Tier
Mount Makulu A 15 v 10 Musamba Basic A (sudden death extra time – just avoiding the dreaded pass off)
B tier
Musamba Basic 20 v 10 Mount makulu B
C Tier
Mount Makulu C 5 v 10 Guardian Angels C
An excellent day was had by all, thanks to local business houses including Embassy Supermarket for providing refreshments for the kids.
It was a fantastic way to kick off the celebrations for the independence weekend, the three trophies will now become floating ones, next tournament scheduled for December, rains permitting – all visitors welcome, come and join us !
