Kyadondo Rugby club team Stallions dominated by ex Tag Rugby players currently young leaders could not hide their joy as they lifted Martin Hansford chairman and pioneer founder of Tag Rugby in Uganda to celebrate their 2011 Sheild Uganda cup championship. Stallions who were the cup holders were tasked with defending it in a tight fixture against more mature side Summerkamp.

The youngsters team start was abit tense as their opponents led on score board by the end of the first half, phillip wokorach’s Golden boot put in the team’s first three points from a penalty kick and the decisive drop goal that saw the team sail past Summerkamp to a final score 30-18 to claim the Sheild Victory. The youngleaders had no idea they played while the man who introduced Rugby to them in form of Tag Rugby nine years ago was watching their biggest game for season 2011.

At the awards ceremony when the TRT Trustees Martin Hansford and Rob Newman were introduced alongside the England counties contigent Pam and Micheal it was tip enough. After recieving the sheild the youngleaders (Stallions) handed it to their mentor carried him up and sung songs of victory,lost for words Martin Hansford thought it was just one of those big dreams, overwhelmed with good news from Mbale Rugby land project success this just crowned his joy.

More to the young leaders success the TRT Gurus were impressed with their staff medal achievements for Team management, Cup refereeing and one player on the winning team. Youngleader Phillip Wokorach was crowned most valuable player (MVP) and walked away with a cash prize of 150.000 Uganda shillings. A very happy Phillip together with teammates from Hana who had to rash back to school after the game had a feast prepared by the school celebrating their previous East Africa Rugby Brookside win but shared with TRT media on how they felt ;

l don’t have so many words to say for lam still in shock on the miracles performed by a team that keeps and works together. I have grown up playing with almost all the people l played with today on my team and it has become a trend for all the others to enjoy and have fun for all our games we play. One special thing l need to mention is that the power that boosts young players our age is at the grass root Tag Rugby levels, Kyadondo has cunningly tapped into it and they will never regret it.

Meeting Summerkamp in the final was tough because l had gotten the feel of their game structure and hard tackles. Being our second
engagement against Summerkamp at this Sheild level final did not bring anything different from what we know in them as opponents, being the side with smaller players but skillful was a bonus as fans pitied us against our mature bigger opponents however we managed to pull through relying on team spirit and borrowing the TRT leadership code. After the win we were told Martin was around, for us it called for a double celebration.

Paul Masendi
A jubilant Alfred Masendi said it pays off well grooming talent at Primary school level. When l played competitive Tag Rugby in primary school l did not imagine being a part of such tremendous success ahead. We played against each others‘s schools so hard without tackles but for a win at the Kampala grand tournaments and the best school always led and took back all the silverware this is what Stallions is today and will soon capture beyond Uganda national level with confidence. To our TRT founders who have blessed our win with their presence it is present enough to boost our energies and talent we shall keep glowing.

Stallions were last Saturday hosted by Kyadondo Rugby club chairman Andrew Owori for a drink up Celebration in which the chairman said the club is proud of the team and will always reward teams for their hard work. Tag Rugby young leaders and coaches look forward to 10 years of Tag Rugby celebration in Uganda next year.
