New Greenwich District Scouts hold District Tag Festival

The New Greenwich District Scouts recently held a District Tag Festival. Attended by Scouts from many troops across the District and a number of Scout leaders, the event took place at Blackheath Rugby’s Well Hall facility. The weather was fantastic and all benefited from the Indian summer.

Girls and Boys played in teams made up from a mix of scouts from different groups. The teams gelled well from the beginning and some good elegant interplay was seen from all the sides, a real testament to the ability of these young people to meet and get together with other young people. Many of which have never met before and integrate with each other and produce amazing teamwork and results.

Demonstrating some good team tries and creating the chances to score for individuals too.

There was even a chance to see an ‘exhibition’ game, where some of the Leaders played each other in probably the most competitive game of the Morning. All the players were winners on the day receiving Yazoo Milkshakes and gifts kindly donated by Yazoo.

The Tag Rugby Trust assisted by running the event and training with the Scout Leaders and they have been doing that for the past two years. This has ensured that the project has become more and more successful. Trevor Martingell, Trustee commented that the Standard of play was superb considering that 80% of the Children had never played Tag and only received the short training session prior to playing some games.

Andy Stanley from the 40th Greenwich Scout group has been organising a Tag Rugby Programme for the past 3 years and was pleased with the turnout of the Groups. He said that there had been a lot of interest but due to other events a number of scouts he’d spoken to were unable to attend. It all bodes well for the next event which is scheduled for the Spring of Next year and will involve all the Greenwich District groups and with interest in running similar events in other Scouting districts and Counties, the future looks bright for a perfect partnership between Scouting and TAG rugby.
