Esher CofE High School Dance, paint and coach Tag Rugby in Zambia 2011
on Aug 12 in Events, News, Zambia tagged by Martin TRT24 Children and teachers from Esher Church of England High School visited Lusaka in July 2011 and ran a Tag Rugby and dance programme to the schools and orphanages in the Chilanga area.
Whilst running the programme they also found time to refurbish, paint and install electrics at the SOSCO Community School. The project was undertaken throughout the week around the Tag Rugby and dance programmes and proved to be a major success.
Esher had been to Chilanga before in 2009 with the Tag Rugby Trust and Chris Horod (Tour Leader from Esher) was confident that the children would be able to run all the Sport programmes and the restoration and decorating programme in the area.
At the end of the week, SOSCO had clean, tidy and well painted classrooms with new electrical supplies and facilities. Whilst the Tag Rugby & Dance programmes again proved very successful and cups were won by St Patricks, Chilanga and Musamba schools. Dance productions were demonstrated at the end of week tournament which was held at the Musamba Football Ground.
Over 500 children were taught during the week in Tag & Dance and the Esher Volunteers had a life changing experience—Danielle commented when she returned to the UK– I miss Zambia so much just playing rugby with the kids was so much fun! As I had never played or had any interest in rugby before then, it was amazing!! I just wish I could go back!
Esher also experienced a Walking safari local to where they stayed at Baobab College who play host to the UK schools and do a fantastic job at it! Then they went to Livingstone to see Victoria Falls and other activities to earn a rest form the busy 10 days they spent in Lusaka.
