Entebbe’s Bugonga Primary school are the 2011 Rwenzori Tag Rugby Festival champions after brushing off challenge from determined Namate Primary school in a final that climaxed 4-2 on Friday 21st at the Fisheries Grounds in Entebbe. Bugonga B had knocked off promising St.Agnes 2-0 and Mongers Academy 2-0 at the semi’s stage to make an entrance to the final while Namate edged Lake Victoria 2-1 to book themselves a cup date against Bugonga B.

The Entebbe teachers Tag Rugby committe who sat and came up with the idea of having an event run before close of the year and ran their own tournament were impressed with the day’s delivery. Tag Rugby super volunteer Entebbe Ivan Arinaitwe recounts how he will not look back again basing on the tremendous success and cooperation he is recieving from area stakeholders. “Equipment was a challenge that took us long to kick off we could not accept a mere challenge of funds to run an event hold us back. The TRT District manager Entebbe has also given us the strength with all the supporting document that is making our progress easier but this is only the beginning” Ivan intimated

At kickoff all teams had seen the Festival cup a move that doubled their effort as Bugonga’s additional effort for being the old broom that knew all corners did not deter new entrants St.Thereza, St.Joseph Katabi and Mongers Academy from competing favourably like the pioneers. St.Thereza A put up a spirited challenge eliminating Bugonga’s A team while Namate kicked out Lake Victoria primary school.

St. Thereza took on Bugonga B drawing 3-3 but slipped in the additional sudden death time in which Bugonga B made a grand entry to date Namate for the teams victory of the first edition of Entebbe Tag Rugby Festival.

Guest of honour Entebbe Municipal Education officer Deo Ssekyole abandoned his seat preferably watching the tight action at the side line. “I did not know Tag Rugby stimulates fun and enjoyment to the kids in this way. The level of competition amongest the different primary school pupils and their teachers involvement is way too perfect. I thank Tag Rugby Trust, sponsors Rwenzori Mineral water for quenching particpants thirst and Mongers Rugby club as well as schools Head teachers for making the tournament a success. l encourage your cooperation with the Municipal office to introduce Tag Rugby on our calender to take on all Entebbe schools by next year” Ssekyole emphasised.

Entebbe Rugby club chairman Oscar Olaro who presented the winner’s trophy to Bugonga primary school thanked sponsors Rwenzori and Entebbe sports office for their contribution to the success of the event. He said Mongers Rugby club is ready to work hand in hand with Tag Rugby Trust to groom future Rugby players since activities contribute to club numbers.
